SERAP Urges Tinubu to Withdraw NBC's Censorship Order

The Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) has called on President Bola Tinubu to immediately withdraw a recent directive from the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC), which they describe as unlawful and a threat to press freedom. In a letter dated April 18, 2026, signed by SERAP's Deputy Director Kolawole Oluwadare, the organization requested that the President instruct the Minister of Information to inform the NBC to reverse the notice issued on April 17, 2026.

This notice warned broadcasters against expressing personal opinions and allegedly intimidated guests, which SERAP argues represents an attempt to impose prior censorship on media outlets. They contend that such provisions are vague and unconstitutional, violating both Nigerian constitutional rights and international human rights law.

SERAP emphasized that failure to act could lead to legal action against the state and recommended that measures be taken within 48 hours. They also highlighted the risks of arbitrary enforcement and the chilling effect on journalists ahead of the 2027 general elections.
