ASUU Threatens Strike Over Unpaid Salaries, 2025 Agreement

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has threatened to resume its suspended nationwide strike due to unpaid salaries and inadequate implementation of the 2025 FGN-ASUU Agreement. ASUU President Christopher Piwuna announced this on Friday in Abuja following an emergency National Executive Council meeting.

He revealed that three-and-a-half months of salaries out of the seven-and-a-half months withheld from lecturers remain unpaid. The union highlighted that several aspects of the December 2025 agreement have not been fully implemented, contributing to ongoing welfare issues for university lecturers.

ASUU warned that the Federal Government's failure to address these issues could lead to another nationwide industrial action. The Tinubu administration has paid four months of the withheld salaries, leaving three-and-a-half months outstanding.

ASUU has a history of strikes primarily focused on lecturers' welfare, university funding, and the implementation of agreements with successive governments. The latest dispute reflects ongoing concerns regarding the agreement's implementation and outstanding payments.
