Tinubu's UNGA Absence Sparks Criticism from Atiku Camp

President Bola Tinubu's reported decision not to attend the 81st United Nations General Assembly in New York has prompted scrutiny from the camp of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar. Paul Ibe, Atiku’s media adviser, expressed concerns in a statement on X, noting that a source close to the Presidency confirmed Tinubu's absence without providing a reason.

This decision follows earlier indications that Tinubu would attend and deliver Nigeria's national statement, with Nigeria’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ambassador Jimoh Ibrahim, previously affirming Tinubu's participation. The UNGA is scheduled from September 22 to 28, with Tinubu initially set to speak on September 23.

If he does not attend, Vice President Kashim Shettima may represent Nigeria, having done so in previous sessions. Ibe criticized the change as more than a routine adjustment, referencing the administration's significant investments in improving Nigeria's image in Washington, including a reported $9 million lobbying arrangement.

He also raised concerns about a pending Freedom of Information Act case in the U.S. involving Tinubu.
