Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has rejected how the Tinubu administration has portrayed his fuel subsidy proposal, contending via spokesman Phrank Shaibu that officials deliberately twisted details to weaken the plan. His Friday statement followed Dangote Refinery's expression of alarm regarding potential price controls that might push private refineries into operating losses.

Atiku's proposal hinges on a production-based subsidy framework aimed at reducing crude feedstock costs for eligible Nigerian refineries, as opposed to enforcing artificial pump-price restrictions. He stressed that his strategy departs fundamentally from conventional import subsidies, focusing instead on Nigeria's domestic production pipeline.

Under Atiku's framing, this model would diminish fuel expenses for Nigerians while safeguarding profitability margins for operators such as Dangote.
