Atiku Abubakar Calls for Justice Over NSCDC Custody Deaths

Atiku Abubakar, the former Vice President and 2027 presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), has called for accountability regarding the deaths of suspected illegal miners while in the custody of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) in Niger State. In a statement on X, he expressed deep sadness over the incident, stating that the suspects were entitled to protection and dignity regardless of the allegations against them.

Atiku commended the federal government for suspending the Niger State NSCDC Commandant, Suberu Aniviye, and ordering a full investigation into the deaths. He insisted that the investigation must be independent, thorough, and transparent, with public disclosure of findings.

Atiku emphasized that the families of the deceased deserve justice and more than mere condolences. The suspected illegal miners were arrested during enforcement operations on September 15 and 16, and 37 were confirmed dead, with forensic examinations underway to determine the cause of death.
