Atiku Abubakar Urges Tinubu to Lower Fuel Prices

Atiku Abubakar, the former Vice President of Nigeria, called on President Bola Tinubu to reduce fuel prices during a speech in Abuja. He argued that the removal of the petrol subsidy on May 29, 2023, has exacerbated transportation, food, and production costs, placing a heavy burden on families, workers, farmers, and businesses.

Atiku stated that rising petrol prices have led to increased transportation costs, which in turn raise food prices and affect various sectors of the economy. He criticized Tinubu for dismissing his previous suggestions for government intervention as showing "serious ignorance" and questioned whether the concerns raised by the Nigeria Labour Congress, petroleum marketers, and ordinary citizens could also be deemed ignorant.

Atiku emphasized the need for the government to review policies that worsen economic hardship and warned against repeating the negative consequences of petrol subsidy removal with electricity subsidies planned for phase-out in 2027.
