Atiku Abubakar Urges Tinubu to Lower Petrol Prices

Atiku Abubakar, the former Vice President of Nigeria, called on President Bola Tinubu to utilize the remaining eight months of his administration to lower petrol prices and alleviate economic pressures on Nigerian families. In a public address titled "Address on Fuel Prices, Palliatives and the Cost of Living," Atiku emphasized that the consequences of the May 29, 2023, petrol subsidy removal have significantly affected citizens, impacting costs from petrol stations to family dining tables.

He criticized Tinubu's previous dismissal of his calls for a review of the subsidy withdrawal, questioning whether other stakeholders like Congress and petroleum marketers were also ignorant. Atiku proposed a production subsidy for petroleum products refined in Nigeria, contrasting it with imported products, and warned against the planned phase-out of electricity subsidies from 2027, highlighting the reliance of various trades on affordable electricity.

He concluded by differentiating between economic statistics and the realities faced by citizens.
