Atiku Abubakar Backs Power Rotation Agreement in Nigeria

Atiku Abubakar, a prominent political figure and presidential candidate of the People's Democratic Party (PDP), was identified as one of the leaders who agreed to a power rotation framework in Nigeria. This disclosure was made by George Akume, the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), during a press briefing in Abuja on Tuesday, coinciding with the 27th Democracy Day anniversary.

Akume explained that the introduction of a zoning principle is crucial for maintaining national stability. The agreement, which dates back to discussions among leaders including late Chief Solomon Lar and Alhaji Adamu Ciroma in the wake of the annulled June 12, 1993 elections, stipulates that presidential power should alternate between the North and South.

This arrangement is particularly relevant as Bola Tinubu, the current president, completes his first term in 2027, succeeding Muhammadu Buhari, who governed for eight years.
