Atiku's Fuel Subsidy Call Challenges Tinubu's Administration

Hon. Austin Usman Okai, a public affairs analyst and human rights advocate, described former Vice President Atiku Abubakar’s call for a reevaluation of the fuel subsidy policy as a major political and economic challenge to President Bola Tinubu's administration. In a statement made on Monday, Okai noted that the renewed debate over fuel subsidy has revealed unresolved questions regarding the management of savings generated from its removal.

He emphasized that the controversy transcends the binary debate of restoring or permanently discontinuing the subsidy, focusing instead on accountability, transparency, and the economic welfare of Nigerians amid rising fuel prices and a worsening cost of living. Okai asserted that Atiku's intervention has prompted significant responses from the Presidency and government officials, indicating the sensitivity of the issue.

He urged the government to provide a comprehensive account of the financial gains from subsidy removal, including savings, fund deployment, and benefits to citizens. Okai concluded that any decision regarding the subsidy should prioritize economic realities and the welfare of Nigerians.
