Nigeria's NCTC Earns AU Accreditation as Counter Terrorism Hub

On October 27, 2026, the African Union (AU) accredited Nigeria's National Counter Terrorism Centre (NCTC) as a Regional Centre of Excellence in Counter Terrorism. This announcement was made by Dr Idriss Mounir Lallali, Acting Director of the African Union Counter Terrorism Centre (AUCTC), during the African Lessons Learned Forum in Abuja.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu had previously declared the NCTC a Regional Centre of Excellence for West Africa and the Sahel in April 2024. Michael Abu, Head of Strategic Communication at NCTC-ONSA, stated that this accreditation fulfills the President's vision to enhance intelligence sharing and operational coordination in combating terrorism.

The AU's recognition followed a rigorous assessment of the NCTC's governance, training programs, and adherence to human rights. The accreditation process began with a Memorandum of Understanding signed in September 2025, followed by a technical assessment in December 2025.

The NCTC is now positioned to support AU member states through specialized training and enhanced counter-terrorism cooperation.
