AU-IBAR Evaluates Nigeria's PPR Eradication Readiness

The African Union Inter-African Bureau for Animal Resources (AU-IBAR) is conducting a monitoring and evaluation mission in Nigeria to assess the country's preparedness for the 2030 eradication of peste des petits ruminants (PPR). The mission, which commenced on July 20, 2026, is supported by the European Union and aims to evaluate the implementation of Nigeria's national strategic plan for PPR eradication.

The mission will review the country's veterinary systems and institutional capacities, identify gaps, and recommend measures to accelerate progress toward achieving PPR-free status. Idi Mukhtar Maiha, the Minister of Livestock Development, reaffirmed the federal government's commitment to the 2030 target and emphasized the importance of addressing PPR, which threatens the livelihoods of millions of smallholder livestock farmers.

The government is also rehabilitating veterinary research institutes and investing in modern veterinary infrastructure to enhance disease surveillance and control.
