Nigeria Launches Workshop for PPR Eradication by 2030

The Federal Government of Nigeria has launched a pre-training workshop for the National Peste des Petits Ruminants (PPR) Sero-Surveillance Field Activity, aimed at bolstering the country's disease surveillance system and achieving the target of eradicating PPR by 2030. The two-day workshop, which took place in Lafia, Nasarawa State on Monday, 24th August 2026, gathered veterinary epidemiologists, state veterinary officers, researchers, and other stakeholders, with support from the African Union Inter-African Bureau for Animal Resources (AU-IBAR).

Chief Veterinary Officer of Nigeria, Dr. Samuel Anzaku, emphasized the importance of reliable laboratory evidence for understanding disease circulation and guiding vaccination efforts. He stated that the surveillance exercise would provide current and geographically representative evidence on PPR exposure and population immunity.

Anzaku noted that the success of Nigeria's 2030 PPR eradication target relies on effective surveillance, reliable laboratory evidence, and sustained political commitment. AU-IBAR representative Mr. Charles Lodiaga reiterated support for Nigeria's efforts, highlighting the need for reliable results for disease control.
