AUATON Condemns Uber's Exit, Warns Bolt and inDrive

The Amalgamated Union of App-Based Transporters of Nigeria (AUATON) condemned Uber's sudden and unilateral exit from the Nigerian ride-hailing market, which occurred without prior notice to drivers. In a statement issued by Jossy Adaraniwon, the national spokesperson of AUATON, the Union criticized Uber for its irresponsible withdrawal, highlighting the absence of consultation or a transition plan that disregarded the thousands of Nigerian drivers who contributed to the platform's success.

AUATON attributed Uber's exit to its exploitative foundational business model, which fails to recognize workers' rights, rejects collective bargaining, and prioritizes profit over driver welfare. The Union also indicated that this exploitative model has been emulated by Bolt and inDrive, leading to longer waiting times, reduced revenue for drivers, and a decline in active drivers due to poor working conditions.
