Australia Sets New English Test Rules for Student Visas
Australia's Department of Home Affairs has released a detailed list of English language tests recognized for student visa applications, enforcing strict limits on online and at-home test formats. All English test results must be obtained within two years prior to the visa application for Regular Evidence level applicants.
For Streamlined Evidence level applicants, results must be within two years of the decision date if requested by the department. The department will not accept fully online tests, including IELTS Online and TOEFL iBT Home Edition.
A new requirement for TOEFL iBT registration took effect on 21 January 2026, mandating applicants to select "Taking TOEFL for Australia." Additionally, TOEFL iBT results from tests taken between 26 July 2023 and 4 May 2024 will not be accepted due to non-compliance with approval standards. The Cambridge C1 Advanced test will only accept paper-based results from 12 February 2024 to 6 August 2025.
Applicants using LANGUAGECERT Academic must submit both a certificate and a report with their visa application.
