South Africa Only African Nation Allowed Visa-Free Transit in Australia

The Australian Government Department of Home Affairs has published a list of countries whose citizens can transit through Australia without a visa, with South Africa being the only African nation included. This guidance, last updated in September 2024, specifies that eligible travelers must arrive by aircraft, possess a confirmed onward ticket to a third country, and depart within eight hours of arrival.

Additionally, they must remain in the airport transit lounge during their stopover and hold a valid travel document accepted by their destination country. Citizens from all other African nations are not eligible for this transit without a visa (TWOV) and must apply for an appropriate Australian visa.

The guidance also includes special provisions for residents of Hong Kong and Taiwan, as well as holders of Indian official passports. Diplomatic passport holders from several countries, including various African nations, are excluded from the TWOV facility and must obtain a visa.
