Australia Prioritizes Skilled Visa Applications in Key Sectors

Australia's Department of Home Affairs has restructured its skilled visa processing framework through two new Ministerial Directions, specifically Ministerial Direction 121 and Ministerial Direction 122. These directives replace the previous Direction 119 and prioritize visa applications linked to seven key sectors: Construction, Healthcare, Teaching, Agriculture, Aquaculture, Fishing, and Resources.

Applications associated with law enforcement and defense interests are also prioritized. Direction 121 governs temporary skilled visa applications, particularly the Skills in Demand visa (subclass 482), which replaced the Temporary Skill Shortage visa in December.

Following sector-based applications, priority is given to applicants in the Specialist Skills stream, those already in Australia, and then offshore applicants. Direction 122 encompasses a broader range of provisional and permanent skilled visas, including the Employer Nomination Scheme (subclass 186) and others.

The changes reflect the government's strategy to align immigration with labor market demands, particularly in sectors facing workforce shortages.
