Australia Enforces Age Restrictions on Porn Sites

Australia has introduced new regulations mandating that pornographic websites block access to users under 18 years old, as part of a broader initiative to enhance online child safety. The eSafety Commission, headed by Juli Inman Grant, announced that companies failing to comply with these regulations could face penalties of up to AU$49.5 million (approximately US$35 million) per breach.

This move follows a December 10 ban on children under 16 joining social media platforms and aims to restrict access to inappropriate content, including pornography, high-impact violence, and self-harm materials. Users will now be required to confirm their age when accessing restricted materials, with the eSafety Commission monitoring compliance and enforcing actions against non-compliant systems.

The regulations also extend to search engines and app stores, which will blur results related to pornography and high-impact violence by default. This initiative reflects Australia's commitment to safeguarding children in the digital space and ensuring that industry standards are consistently applied.
