FG Seeks Public Input on Social Media Age Limits for Children

The Federal Government of Nigeria has launched a public consultation to gather opinions on potential measures aimed at protecting children online, including the possibility of implementing age restrictions on social media platforms. This initiative was announced on Tuesday via the official X account of the Ministry of Communications, Innovation, and Digital Economy, led by Dr.

Bosun Tijani. He highlighted that while the internet provides significant opportunities for learning and creativity, it also exposes children to risks such as cyberbullying, harmful content, and exploitation through misuse of personal data.

Dr. Tijani noted the importance of evaluating potential policy approaches to safeguard children online, including improving age verification systems and enhancing regulatory oversight.

He urged parents and stakeholders to participate in the survey to help shape evidence-based policies for a safer online environment for children in Nigeria. This move aligns with global trends, as seen in countries like Australia, which has implemented a ban on social media users under 16.
