Avon Medical Practice Enhances Fibroid Awareness in Nigeria

Moyo Awotile, diagnosed with uterine fibroids in 2018, experienced a decade of progressively worsening symptoms, including painful and excessively heavy periods. Initially, she did not take her diagnosis seriously, but as her condition deteriorated, she faced significant pain and discomfort in daily activities.

Eventually, she returned to Avon Medical Practice, where seventeen fibroids were surgically removed from her body. Fibroids, benign growths from the uterine muscle, can lead to severe health issues, including heavy menstrual bleeding, pelvic pain, and fertility problems.

Research indicates that many women delay seeking help due to inadequate knowledge, fear of surgery, and cultural misconceptions. A study from 2025 at the University College Hospital, Ibadan, revealed that 62.3% of women presented for care more than six months after symptoms began, highlighting the importance of awareness and timely medical intervention for uterine fibroids in Nigeria.
