UNIZIK Pupil Dies in Awka Flood as School Bus Overturns

On September 24, a tragic incident occurred in Awka, Anambra State, where Success Ezenwafor, a pupil of Nnamdi Azikiwe University (UNIZIK) Primary School, lost his life after a school shuttle bus was swept away by floodwaters during heavy rainfall. The incident took place on Tuesday along the Awka–Nibo–Nise–Enugwu-Ukwu Ring Road in Awka South Local Government Area.

The bus, which was transporting pupils to school, became trapped and overturned due to rapidly rising floodwaters. Emergency personnel, security operatives, and local residents worked together to rescue seven pupils and two adults, who were then taken to Amaku Teaching Hospital for medical attention.

Unfortunately, Ezenwafor was swept away during the incident, prompting a search operation that led to the recovery of his body later that day. Prince Chinedu Okafor, the chairman of Awka South Local Government Area, confirmed the recovery and reported that the other children were in stable condition.

A family member recounted that Ezenwafor had helped others escape by breaking a window of the bus.
