Babalola Vows Rotary Will Push Polio Fight Despite Money Shortfalls

Rotary International's incoming president says financial pressures won't derail the organization's decades-long campaign to eliminate polio worldwide.
Olayinka Hakeem Babalola, who will soon assume the presidency of Rotary International, has pledged that the organization will maintain its commitment to wiping out polio globally, even as funding constraints threaten health programs across the world. Speaking to Rotarians ahead of his formal takeover, Babalola stated that financial difficulties confronting vaccination efforts internationally will not slow the eradication campaign.
Babalola highlighted recent innovations in immunization delivery as proof of the organization's adaptive approach. In Afghanistan, Rotary-supported health workers have deployed needle-free jet injector technology to vaccinate children in communities that previously resisted immunization programs.
The organization reports that this innovation has helped overcome barriers of fear and mistrust that once kept families away from vaccination efforts. The incoming president warned against complacency in funding health interventions.
He emphasized that sustaining the multi-decade push to eliminate polio requires continued commitment and resources, particularly in difficult operating environments where traditional vaccination methods face community resistance or logistical challenges. Babalola's remarks underscore Rotary's position that the organization intends to remain engaged in its polio eradication work until the disease is completely eliminated.
The organization has not specified new funding targets or timelines for eradication in its recent statements, but has framed the challenge as one requiring both financial stability and technological innovation in vaccine delivery.
