Nigeria's Leaders Push for Sickle Cell Support as Patient Advocates Demand Better Care
Officials and patient advocates are calling for government intervention and community support to improve treatment access and reduce stigma facing sickle cell…
Anambra's First Lady and a national sickle cell foundation have separately called on the Nigerian government and private sector to expand support for patients managing the genetic blood disorder. The appeals came during commemorations of World Sickle Cell Day, with officials emphasizing that treatment requires more than medical intervention alone.
Mrs. Soludo, the Anambra First Lady, used the occasion to stress that individuals and families affected by sickle cell disease need emotional support and social acceptance alongside clinical care.
She highlighted the importance of early detection and community-based awareness efforts to combat stigma and improve access to quality healthcare services. Her statement underscored the role of collective action in strengthening support networks for those living with the condition.
The Oladipupo Foundation, through its founder, made a direct plea to the federal government to subsidize stem cell transplant procedures for patients. The foundation noted that most families in Nigeria cannot afford the costs of such treatments, which represent a scientific advancement that could improve quality of life for those with sickle cell disease.
Kesiena Ikek, a sickle cell survivor, separately urged the government to enhance both healthcare access and the affordability of medications. Ikek described living with sickle cell anemia as experiencing severe physical pain and emotional trauma, and pointed to public misconceptions—including supernatural interpretations—as barriers to proper medical education and support.
An estimated one million people across West Africa live with the condition, according to the reports.
