Bahrain Tightens Work Permit Rules for Foreign Workers and Families

Bahrain's labour authority has published new conditions for work permits, dependent residency, and Golden Residency holders seeking employment in the Gulf…
Bahrain's Labour Market Regulatory Authority (LMRA) has released updated guidelines governing work permits for foreign nationals, affecting employers and expatriate workers across multiple employment categories. The regulations address three distinct pathways: standard work permit applications, dependent residency permits for spouses of foreign staff, and employment access for holders of the country's Golden Residency visa programme.
For employers applying for standard work permits, the LMRA has established several mandatory conditions. These include addressing the status of workers holding multiple-entry permits, whether they are currently in Bahrain or abroad.
The authority also requires that employers comply with examination protocols, with failure to meet these standards resulting in immediate deportation for affected workers. Additionally, new applications must reference a previous personal identification number when applicable.
Spouses of foreign workers seeking dependent residency permits must satisfy four separate conditions before their employer can lodge an application. The LMRA mandates that applicants meet specific income thresholds and that applications come from employers registered and authorised within the LMRA system.
The authority has also set processing timelines that govern how quickly applications move through approval stages. Foreign nationals holding Golden Residency visas face five distinct requirements when transitioning to formal employment.
Work permits under this scheme are issued for either one or two-year terms. The LMRA permits employers to begin renewal processes up to six months before a permit expires, allowing advance planning for workforce continuity.
These regulations apply uniformly to all employers operating under Bahrainian commercial registrations seeking to hire expatriate staff.
