Senator Barau Advocates for Research Commercialization in Universities

Senator Barau, Chair of the Senate Committee on Tertiary Institutions and TETFund, called on Nigerian universities to turn research into wealth during a meeting with Professor Amina Salihi Bayero, Vice Chancellor of Northwest University Kano, in Abuja. He urged the management of higher institutions to diversify revenue sources through the commercialization of research.

Barau noted that maintaining and developing universities requires collective efforts and not just the intervention of a single entity. He stressed the importance of human capital as a key driver of national development, stating that it is no longer solely reliant on resources like petroleum and solid minerals.

He praised the proactive approach of Professor Amina Salihi Bayero, who has been in office since December 2025, and highlighted the university's rapid growth since its establishment in 2012. The Vice Chancellor commended the contributions of the Deputy President of the Senate to the education sector, including scholarships and infrastructure improvements.
