Bayelsa State Evacuates Mentally Challenged Individuals
Bayelsa State has commenced an exercise to evacuate mentally challenged individuals from the streets, directly supervised by Hon. Joanah Gigi, the State Commissioner for Women, Children Affairs, Empowerment and Social Development. This initiative, following a directive from Governor Douye Diri, aims to restore the health and dignity of affected persons.
Approximately 15 individuals were evacuated and taken to a specialist hospital for immediate medical attention. Gigi noted that the number of evacuees was limited by available bed spaces and emphasized that the government would continue the exercise to reach others still on the streets.
The current phase focuses on Yenagoa metropolis, where many vulnerable persons have been identified. The medical team anticipates the initial treatment program will last about three weeks.
After treatment, the government plans to identify the individuals' places of origin for potential repatriation. Gigi praised Governor Diri for his inclusive approach, stating that the intervention also extends to vulnerable non-indigenes in the state.
