Bayelsa Suspends Unhygienic Cowhide Processing

The Bayelsa State Government has ordered the immediate suspension of the unhygienic processing of imported cowhides, commonly known as ponmo, due to serious public health risks. This directive was issued on Thursday by the state Commissioner for Health, Prof.

Seiyefa Brisibe, after a joint inspection of the state’s central abattoir with the Commissioners for Environment and Agriculture, Ebi Ben Ololo and Prof. Sese Bekes.

The inspection revealed unsanitary conditions in which the imported cowhides were processed, including washing with contaminated water and storage under conditions indicating decomposition. Prof.

Brisibe stated that these practices are hazardous and must cease immediately. In response, Governor Douye Diri has activated a multi-sectoral monitoring team to combat illegal and unhygienic food processing activities, which will include intensified inspections and confiscation of unsafe products.

The government has also mandated compulsory health screenings for food processors and urged the public to report any suspected unhygienic food processing activities.
