Benin Jails Ex-defence Minister Over Failed Coup Plot

Benin Republic has jailed former Defence Minister and opposition politician Candid Azannai over a failed coup plot. Azannai is accused of plotting against the state and inciting rebellion.

The failed December 7 coup involved soldiers attempting to overthrow President Patrice Talon, but loyalist forces swiftly crushed the plot. Several individuals, including alleged coup leader Lieutenant Colonel Pascal Tigri, have been arrested and charged with treason.

The Nigerian Air Force assisted in foiling the coup. President Talon, known for driving economic growth, is facing growing jihadist violence in the northern region.

Azannai's detention is part of the ongoing investigation into the failed coup.
