Benue Assembly Proposes N75,000 Salary for Traditional Rulers

The Benue State House of Assembly has recommended a minimum salary of N75,000 for traditional rulers, urging Governor Hyacinth Alia to approve this upward review. The lawmakers emphasized that no traditional ruler should earn below the national minimum wage of N75,000, maintaining a remuneration structure based on the status of traditional institutions.

The resolution was reached during a plenary session presided over by Speaker Berger Alfr. Additionally, the assembly mandated the local government service commission to organize capacity-building programs aimed at improving revenue collection and transparency.

The assembly summoned Joseph Kwaghgba, the executive chairman of the Benue Internal Revenue Service, to present a comprehensive report on the state's Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) and current revenue performance. The assembly aims to enhance oversight of the state's revenue system and implement a new presumptive tax regime to expand the tax base without overburdening businesses and residents.
