Benue-SEMA Advocates Life Jackets After Fatal Boat Accident

The Benue State Emergency Management Agency (Benue-SEMA) has demanded the compulsory wearing of life jackets by passengers and operators on the state’s waterways following a tragic boat accident at the River Katsina-Ala crossing point in Buruku Local Government Area. The accident, which occurred while transporting people back from a funeral, resulted in three confirmed deaths and eight individuals still missing.
Initially, 11 passengers were reported missing, and search efforts are ongoing. The boat was carrying 107 passengers along with 38 Bajaj motorcycles when it overturned.
As of now, 10 motorcycles have been recovered, leaving 28 still unaccounted for. James Iorpuu, the Executive Secretary of Benue-SEMA, represented by Samuel Atii, the agency’s Head of Administration, visited the affected community to assess the situation.
Iorpuu urged the Benue State Government to enact a law mandating life jackets for all waterway travelers and suggested penalties for non-compliance by boat operators.
