Betta Edu Scandal: EFCC Gets 7-Day Ultimatum to Publish Probe Findings

The Committee for Transparency and Social Justice (CTSJ) has given the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) a 7-day ultimatum to publish the findings of its investigation into the corruption scandal involving suspended Minister of Humanitarian Affairs, Betta Edu. The EFCC reportedly uncovered illicit funds spread across 50 bank accounts, with approximately $24 million recovered.

The CTSJ has demanded immediate prosecution of individuals implicated in the case, warning that the EFCC's reluctance to prosecute sends a dangerous message. Failure to comply with the ultimatum could lead to global escalation, with the CTSJ threatening to petition Nigeria's international partners and funding agencies to seek visa bans for EFCC officials.

The petition has also been sent to President Bola Tinubu, the National Assembly leadership, and several foreign embassies and international agencies. Betta Edu was suspended in January 2024 following allegations of diverting funds to a private account.
