REA Launches 1MW Mini-Grid to Boost Rural Economy

The Rural Electrification Agency (REA) has recently commissioned a 1MW renewable energy mini-grid in Balanga, Gombe State, which includes 2.4MWh of battery storage. This project aims to enhance economic activities by providing productive-use equipment such as an electric groundnut oil processing plant, a modular electric rice mill, multi-flour grinding machines, and electric tricycles.
Chief Joseph Olasunkanmi Tegbe, the Minister of Power, emphasized that the initiative is not just about providing electricity but creating an energy platform that fosters productivity, job creation, and economic growth. The REA has been active in various states, with projects including a 505kWp solar mini-grid in Epe, Lagos State, and multiple mini-grids in Adamawa State, Kebbi State, Rivers State, Plateau State, Yobe State, and others.
The agency's approach focuses on linking reliable power to mobility and enterprise, thereby transforming megawatts into market opportunities.
