Bill Gates Proposes 'Human Reserved' Jobs Amid AI Rise

Bill Gates, co-founder of Microsoft, proposed the concept of 'Human Reserved' jobs and a robot tax in a 6,000-word essay titled “The turbulent AI era is here. The choices we make now are critical,” published on his Gates Notes website on Wednesday.

Gates suggests that as artificial intelligence (AI) and robotics advance, certain jobs should be exclusively reserved for humans to manage the expected disruption in the labor market. His perspective is influenced by personal experiences, particularly caring for his father, who suffered from Alzheimer’s disease until his death in 2020.

Gates argues that some aspects of caregiving are irreplaceable by machines, stating, “Something in the care they gave my dad was irreplaceably human.” He believes that economic factors and the potential displacement of workers should guide decisions on which jobs remain human. Gates likens the idea of 'Human Reserved' jobs to nature reserves, emphasizing the importance of preserving certain roles for human workers.
