This criticism comes as Microsoft adopts a more humanitarian public relations approach, particularly after ending certain contracts with the Israeli Ministry of Defense due to concerns about the use of its technology in the war on Gaza. Nadella acknowledged the need for tech companies to "earn social permission" for AI's continued development, indicating a shift in Microsoft's strategy in response to pressure from its employees.

Critics, however, argue that this ethical shift may be more performative than substantive, drawing parallels to Anthropic's controversial use of its AI technology by the U.S. military.
