Nigerian Blind Sambists to Compete at World Cup in Armenia

Rukayat Taiwo and Elizabeth Aceso, two female blind sambists from Nigeria, are scheduled to depart Lagos on April 7 aboard Turkish Airlines for their historic debut at the World Cup in Yerevan, Armenia, taking place on April 11-12. This event marks the first time Africa will present female blind sambists at a world title tournament.

The Nigerian contingent, led by coach Sherifat Akintunde, will compete in blind sambo across three disciplines. This participation underscores Nigeria's pioneering role in promoting inclusivity for athletes with special needs.

Notably, Samuel Oladel Keker became the first Nigerian blind sambist to compete at a World Cup, followed by Sodiq Ajibad, who claimed Africa's first medal in 2025. Taiwo, a Lagos State champion in the 54 kg category, and Aceso, competing in the 59 kg category, carry hopes for Nigeria's success on the global stage.

Sherif Ham, Vice President of the Nigeria Sambo Association, emphasized the importance of this moment for inclusivity and the potential for future Olympic participation.
