Boniface underwent surgery on January 10, 2023, after suffering significant cartilage damage during a Bundesliga match in December 2022.

The procedure was performed by renowned surgeon Dr. Christian Fink in Innsbruck, Austria. Despite persistent knee pain, Boniface managed to return to the bench for Werder Bremen's Bundesliga draw against VfB Stuttgart on April 26, 2023, marking his first matchday squad appearance in three months, although he remained an unused substitute.
