Nigeria Launches Guidelines for Healthier Food Procurement

On July 13, 2026, the Bureau of Public Procurement (BPP) unveiled national guidelines for public procurement of food and related services at an event in Abuja. Dr.

Adebowale Adedokun, the Director General of BPP, described the launch as a significant milestone in Nigeria's public procurement reform, commending President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his support. The guidelines aim to cover the entire food procurement value chain, ensuring qualified suppliers provide food-related services to government institutions.

They are designed to promote healthier diets, support local agriculture, and enhance food security and job creation. Dr.

Izaq Adekunl Salako, the Minister of State for Health and Social Welfare, emphasized that the guidelines would improve public health and reduce the burden of non-communicable diseases. The guidelines also encourage state governments to adopt uniform procurement practices.

Other stakeholders, including Ms. Kachollom Daju and Dr.

Kingsley Akinroy, expressed support for the initiative, highlighting its potential to improve the nutritional quality of meals provided in public institutions.
