CBN Awarded Global Central Bank of the Year 2026

The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has been recognized as the Global Central Bank of the Year 2026 due to its sweeping economic reforms aimed at stabilizing Nigeria's economy. This award follows the appointment of Olayemi Cardoso as CBN Governor in October 2023, during which the bank introduced significant reforms to restore macroeconomic stability and strengthen institutional credibility.

The reforms included the end of quasi-fiscal interventions, tightening monetary policy, and addressing the foreign exchange backlog. The CBN replaced multiple exchange rate windows with a unified market-driven system, enhancing transparency and price discovery.

As a result, the naira stabilized, and Nigeria's external reserves rose to $46.7 billion by November 2025, the highest in nearly seven years. The CBN also implemented aggressive monetary tightening, raising interest rates to 18.75% in 2023 and planning further reductions to combat inflation.

Structural reforms in the banking sector, including a major recapitalization program, are set to ensure compliance with higher capital thresholds by March 31, 2026.
