Ansaru Terror Leader Sentenced to 15 Years for Illegal Activities

The Federal High Court in Abuja has sentenced Mahmud Usman, the leader of the Ansaru terrorist group, to 15 years in prison. Usman pleaded guilty to illegally mining California stone without lawful authority, with the proceeds being channeled to purchase arms and ammunition for terrorist operations.

Usman and his deputy were also accused of attacking the Nigerian Army at Wawa Cantonment in Kainji, Niger State, in 2022, resulting in mass casualties. Investigators revealed that Usman and his accomplices received training in weapon handling, war tactics, and the fabrication of improvised explosive devices (IEDs) at a terrorist camp.

The group's senior commanders were linked to advanced training in Mali-based terrorist organizations.
