Court Grants Protection to Witness in Coup Trial

The Federal High Court in Abuja commenced the trial of retired Army General Moham Ibrahim Gana and five others, accused of plotting a failed coup against President Bola Tinubu. The court, presided over by Justice Joyc Abdulmalik, granted a request from the prosecution for special protection for a key witness due to security concerns.

The witness will testify under strict protection measures, including appearing behind a screen, and their real name will not be disclosed during the proceedings. The case involves 13 counts filed by the Federal Government, including treason and terrorism.

The defendants, who were first arraigned on April 22, have pleaded not guilty. Prosecutor Rotimi Oyedepo informed the court that four witnesses are ready to testify, and three financial institution officials provided evidence related to the case.

The court's decision to shield the witness was supported by legal provisions allowing such measures in sensitive cases involving national security.
