Secret Trial of 30 Military Officers for Coup Plot Begins

The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) in Nigeria has commenced a secret trial of 30 military officers accused of conspiring to overthrow the government of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. This trial began on April 24, 2026, and is being conducted behind closed doors at a secure venue, with journalists barred from attending.

The officers were brought in early that morning, arriving at approximately 8:54 AM, and were escorted by the Defence Intelligence Agency. The military confirmed that these officers are facing trial following a month-long investigation that began with their initial arrests in October 2025.

The allegations are linked to a plot aimed at destabilizing the current administration, prompting military authorities to pursue prosecution in a court martial in accordance with military law governing internal disciplinary offenses among service personnel. While specific charges have not been disclosed, military sources indicate that the alleged actions are considered a significant threat to national security.

Additionally, six civilian suspects associated with the case have been arraigned in a Federal High Court in Abuja.
