Court Martial Inaugurated for 36 Personnel Over Coup

On April 24, 2026, the Defence Headquarters (DHQ) inaugurated a general court martial to try 36 military personnel accused of an alleged mutiny with the intent to overthrow the government. Major General Samaila Uba disclosed this information, emphasizing the military's commitment to discipline and accountability in safeguarding the nation's constitutional integrity.

The court martial's establishment follows an earlier announcement made on January 26, 2026, and is part of a broader effort to reinforce military discipline. The court will adhere to due process and ensure justice is served impartially.

In October 2025, the DHQ confirmed the arrest of 16 officers for alleged indiscipline linked to the coup plot. Additionally, the federal government had previously arraigned six individuals, including retired Major General Moham Gana and retired Captain Erasmus Victor, in a federal high court in Abuja, facing 13 counts related to the conspiracy to overthrow the government.
