INEC Sets New Dates for Nigeria's 2027 Elections

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has officially announced new dates for Nigeria's upcoming elections. The presidential election is now scheduled for January 16, 2027, while the governorship and state assembly elections will take place on March 6, 2027.

This adjustment follows the repeal of the Electoral Act 2022 and the enactment of the Electoral Act 2026, which required a restructuring of the electoral calendar. The announcement was made by INEC Chairman Moham Haruna during a statement issued on Thursday.

The previous date for the presidential election was February 20, 2027, which had sparked controversy, particularly from former Vice President Atiku Abubakar. He urged INEC to reconsider the timing, noting that it coincides with the Ramadan fasting period, which could negatively impact voter participation.

The adjustments are part of INEC's efforts to ensure compliance with constitutional statutory requirements while addressing public concerns regarding the electoral schedule.
