INEC Reschedules 2027 General Elections in Nigeria

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced a revision of the timetable for the 2027 general elections in Nigeria. The presidential and national assembly elections are now scheduled for Saturday, January 16, 2027, while the governorship and state assembly elections will take place on Saturday, February 6, 2027.

This adjustment follows the introduction of the Electoral Act 2026, which repealed the previous Electoral Act 2022, necessitating a review of statutory timelines for pre-election activities. The commission, led by Chairman Mohan Kudu Haruna, stated that party primaries will commence on April 23, 2026, and conclude on May 30, 2026.

Campaigning for the presidential and national assembly elections is set to begin on August 19, 2026, with the governorship and state assembly campaigns starting on September 9, 2026. INEC has emphasized the importance of compliance with electoral laws to ensure credible polls.

Additionally, the Osun State governorship election has been rescheduled to August 8, 2026, and August 15, 2026.
