Rivers Assembly Halts Fubara Impeachment After Tinubu's Help

The Rivers State House of Assembly has suspended impeachment proceedings against Governor Siminalayi Fubara and Deputy Governor Ngozi Odu after an intervention by President Bola Tinubu. This decision was announced during a plenary session on Thursday, marking the assembly's first sitting of 2026.

The impeachment proceedings had begun earlier in January 2026, with allegations of gross misconduct outlined in a notice read by Speaker Major Jack. The assembly had requested the Chief Judge of Rivers State, Simeon Amadi, to constitute a seven-member panel to investigate the allegations.

However, Justice Amadi declined to act due to an existing high court order restraining any further action against Fubara and Odu. The Chief Judge noted that the assembly had appealed the restraining order.

The impeachment process gained momentum following accusations from Federal Capital Territory Minister Nyesom Wike, who claimed Fubara reneged on a peace agreement brokered by Tinubu. Following a meeting between Tinubu and Fubara on February 8, 2025, Wike expressed optimism about resolving the political crisis in Rivers State.
