Nigerian Senate Rejects Amendment Mandating Electronic Transmission of Election Results

The Nigerian Senate has rejected an amendment that would have mandated the electronic transmission of election results. The proposed amendment to Clause 52(3) of the Electoral Act sought to make it compulsory for the President's office and INEC to upload poll unit results in real-time to an INEC portal once Form EC8A is duly completed and signed by all parties involved.

However, lawmakers decided to retain the current provision in the Electoral Act, which states that the President's office shall transfer election results, including the total number of accredited voters and ballot results, in the manner prescribed by the Commission. This decision leaves the mode of transmitting election results at the discretion of INEC, rather than making electronic upload mandatory.
