Nigerian Senate Reverses Decision on Electronic Transmission of Election Results, Sparks Controversy

The Nigerian Senate recently rescinded its earlier decision to reject the electronic transmission of election results, introducing a new clause mandating the process with certain conditions. The motion to rescind the previous decision was moved by Senate Chief Whip Mohammed Monguno during a plenary session in Abuja. The decision to reconsider the issue was influenced by the emergence of fresh issues regarding the transparency and smooth conduct of elections.

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has advocated for real-time electronic transmission as the best option for credible elections, emphasizing the need to avoid compromising the integrity of the electoral process. In contrast, former Transport Minister Rotimi Amaechi's son led a protest at the National Assembly against the Senate's rejection of real-time transmission of election results.
