Tinubu Honors Joe Igbokwe and Others on Democracy Day

On June 12, 2023, President Bola Tinubu honored Joe Igbokwe, a chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC), along with 50 other distinguished Nigerians during a nationwide broadcast marking Democracy Day. This event commemorated 27 years of unbroken civilian rule in Nigeria and paid tribute to the late Chief M.K.O.

Abiola, the winner of the annulled June 12, 1993 presidential election. Among the awardees were notable figures such as Chief Ayo Opadokun and Dr.

Arthur Nwankwo. President Tinubu also addressed pressing national security challenges, particularly recent student abductions in Oyo and Borno states.

He announced a commitment of 5.41 trillion naira for defense in the 2026 budget and plans to recruit 50,000 police officers. Furthermore, he emphasized the need for full financial autonomy for Nigeria's 774 local government areas to enhance grassroots development and tackle issues like inflation and electricity crises.
