Oyo State Promotes Exclusive Breastfeeding for Health

The Oyo State Government has declared breast milk as irreplaceable, urging mothers to adopt exclusive breastfeeding practices. This statement was made by the Commissioner for Health, Dr Oluwaserimi Ajetunmobi, during the launch of the 2026 World Breastfeeding Week at the Adeoyo Maternity Teaching Hospital in Yemetu, Ibadan.

The theme for the week, “Breastfeeding for a Sustainable Start in Life: Strengthen What Works,” highlights the importance of proven breastfeeding practices that enhance child survival and maternal health. Ajetunmobi stated that no manufactured infant formula can match the nutritional benefits of breast milk, which protects against diseases and supports healthy development.

She identified barriers to successful breastfeeding, including short maternity leave and inadequate workplace support, and appealed to employers to create breastfeeding-friendly environments. Additionally, she emphasized that breastfeeding is an investment in national development, as healthy children contribute to economic growth.

Dr Muyideen Babatunde Olatunji, Executive Secretary of the Oyo State Primary Health Care Board, also recognized exclusive breastfeeding as a key strategy for reducing child stunting.
