Burna Boy Presents Socrates Award to Bukayo Saka at 2026 Ballon d'Or

At the Ballon d'Or ceremony in London on Monday, October 26, Burna Boy, a Grammy-winning Nigerian musician, handed the 2026 Socrates Award to Bukayo Saka, Arsenal and England forward. This honour recognizes footballers who utilize their influence, wealth, and standing to champion charitable initiatives benefiting communities.

BigShoe's medical support for vulnerable children earned Saka this recognition. Before presenting the trophy, Burna Boy took the stage to discuss his own sporting legacy.

He described establishing a football academy in Nigeria years prior, aimed at developing grassroots players and promoting the nation's football culture. Expressing optimism about his academy's future impact, the musician hoped it would cultivate talent capable of reaching elite global competitions and eventually earning prestigious accolades at major ceremonies such as the Ballon d'Or.

The event exemplified how Nigerian cultural figures and international football increasingly intersect on the world's most prominent stages. Burna Boy's role highlighted the growing interplay between African creative industries and top-tier sports institutions.

Furthermore, the award ceremony demonstrated the extent to which professional athletes now blend humanitarian commitment with their sporting pursuits. A separate video emerged from the event featuring England striker Harry Kane commenting on his musical preferences.

When posed about which African artists appeal to him, Kane named Burna Boy and cited 'Big 7' among tracks he enjoys listening to. Kane's public affinity for the Nigerian artist boosted the visibility of African music within the international football community gathered at the ceremony.
