Canada Defines eTA Ineligibility for Travelers

The Canadian government has published guidance detailing three groups of individuals who cannot apply for an Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA) for air travel to Canada. The first group includes travelers who already possess a valid Canadian visa; they do not need an eTA and should continue using their visa until it expires.

The second group consists of Canadian citizens, including those with dual citizenship, who must present a valid Canadian passport when entering Canada and are ineligible for an eTA. The third group is Canadian permanent residents, who are also barred from applying for an eTA and must travel with a valid permanent resident card or a permanent resident travel document.

The eTA is an entry requirement for visa-exempt foreign nationals and is electronically linked to a traveler’s passport, valid for up to five years or until the passport expires.
